We will explore here three types of western bar or counter stools which will suit several different tastes and occasions. We`ll talk about modern bar stool round saddle stool and cowhide seat western saddle bar / counter stool.
Adjustable height stool - from bar height to counter height: Typical adjustable height counter stool will readily adjust between the counter height of about 24 - 25 inches to 29 - 32 inches or so bar height. This will allow a stool like that to be used at the bar top as well as at the counter top which will add to its choices. While the bar stools and the counter stools are available in both metal or chrome or wood finish an adjustable height stool is usually only available in the chrome finish or a stainless steel finish as these are the only ways the single foot of a stool can be made height adjustable. That single foot contains a pneumatic mechanism that uses compressed air to `lift the seat surface upward and uses the person`s own weight to lower the stool surface downward.
A counter stool proper: A counter top height is about 36 inches or about three feet. For an average height American this is a good size for food preparation. And when one wants to eat breakfast at the counter the appropriate height of the breakfast stool seat is 24 inches or so which is termed the counter stool height. For busy people this is a great choice of height: The food can be prepared and consumed in the same space and it can be consumed either sitting up or standing down on a modern counter stool. Lots of choices and no hassle with setting up another table when in a hurry.
If your horizontal (floor space) is limited you may choose armless. Arms generally add 3 to 6 inches to the overall width of a single bar stool and can add up to 18" in width on just 3 bar stools. (See "How Many Do I Need?)
30" bar stools are commonly used for a raised eating surface in the 40 to 42 inch height range. Many homes and apartments today are built with a standard 36" high counter then have a back splash and raised eating area. In most circumstances if the eating area is HIGHER than your standard kitchen counter you will need a 30" stool.
Swivel Bar Stools: A feature that is available on many bar stools is a swivel. These stools can turn around which makes it easier for whoever is sitting in it to get on or off. They also don`t scratch up your floor as much since you don`t need to push them around every time you want to get in or out. You can find swivel bar stools that are made out of wood or metal in lots of different styles.
